What's Best for Kids: Bottled Water or Fountains?

As the U.S. taste for bottled water grows, environmentalists have been trying to sell people on good old-fashioned—and free—tap water.
But tap water's place in schools is thorny, since some experts say children should actually be drinking more bottled water to head off two stubborn health threats: obesity due to sugary drinks and lead poisoning.
"If children go from sugary beverages to bottled water, you get a benefit to public health, but not so much the environment," said Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University.
"If they go from sugar beverages to [clean] tap water, you get a public health home run and environmental home run."
Bottled water is a drain on the environment: The U.S. public goes through about 50 billion water bottles a year, and most of those plastic containers are not recycled, according to Elizabeth Royte's 2008 book Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It. Transporting the bottles and keeping them cold also burns fossil fuels, which give off greenhouse gases.
Groundwater pumping by bottled-water companies also draws heavily on underground aquifers and harms watersheds, according to the environmental nonprofit the Sierra Club. And a 2008 investigation by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group found some bottled water is sullied with untested industrial chemicals, and may not necessarily be cleaner than tap water.
Lead Dangers
But switching to tap water could be a bad idea in some schools where the risk of lead contamination from old pipes—known to affect physical and mental development—is high, particularly in large urban areas such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.
For instance in September 2009, the Associated Press published a nationwide investigation showing that the drinking water in schools in 27 states is contaminated with lead and other toxic substances from lead-soldered pipes generally installed before 1985.
Schools that rely on their own wells are subject to regular testing by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). But the agency does not regulate drinking-water quality for the rest of the nation’s schools, which get their water from local utilities.
Most school districts do not test their water because of the costs associated with lead remediation, said Marc Edwards, a civil engineer at Virginia Tech.
"Even when we offer to do the analysis for free, the majority of schools don't want to know," Edwards said.
But some solutions are much less costly than replacing a whole pipe system, he said. Those range from putting filters on taps to remove lead, to flushing water fountains after a period of stagnation.
Still, for some school districts, the most cost-effective measure may be providing kids with bottled water.
In 2007, Baltimore City public schools switched their entire system to bottled water after a study of 84 randomly selected water fountains found 10 with lead levels high than the EPA's cutoff of 20 parts per billion. The school district decided it would be cheaper to provide bottled water than testing and remediation efforts.
Edwards applauds Baltimore's decision.
"I’m a huge proponent of tap water, but if your child going to one of schools where pieces of lead are falling into the tap water on a random basis, that risk pales in comparison to the small cost of bottled water."
Sugar High
Margo Wootan, director of nutrition for the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), added that environmental groups that have demonized bottled water should refocus their campaigns on all bottled beverages, including soda.
"Environmentalists place a higher burden on people who drink water instead of soda, and that isn’t fair," Wootan said.
School beverages, particularly sugar-laden soda and sports drinks sold in vending machines, have come under increasing fire from nutrition-advocacy groups such as CSPI.
Obesity rates among children aged 6 to 11 have more than doubled in the past 20 years, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A 2006 study by Harvard nutritionists found sugar-sweetened beverage consumption is linked to higher body weight among adolescents.
"Soda in schools has been such a huge problem for the last couple of decades, and getting rid of sugar-sweetened beverages and shifting to bottled water should be a top priority," Wootan said.
The School Nutrition Association is also advocating for the elimination of all sugar-sweetened beverages from all schools when Congress takes up the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act in March 2010.
Low-fat milk, 100-percent juices, and bottled water are the new recommended beverages for school meal programs and vending machines.
But other health experts intend to keep fighting for tap water.
"There's more demand for bottled water now in schools, and the beverage industry says they have public health in mind," Yale's Brownell said. "But we're hoping to do a big campaign to encourage consumption of tap water instead."

UPDATE 2-US Democrats would kill healthcare over abortionUPDATE 2-US Democrats would kill healthcare over abortion

WASHINGTON, March 4 (Reuters) - A dozen House of Representatives Democrats opposed to abortion are willing to kill President Barack Obama's healthcare reform plan unless it satisfies their demand for language barring the procedure, Representative Bart Stupak said on Thursday.
"Yes. We're prepared to take responsibility," Stupak said on ABC's "Good Morning America" when asked if he and his 11 Democratic allies were willing to accept the consequences for bringing down healthcare reform over abortion.
"Let's face it. I want to see healthcare. But we're not going to bypass the principles of belief that we feel strongly about," he said. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Take a Look on healthcare [ID:nHEALTH] ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Michigan Democrat held up House legislation last year until he was satisfied that its language prevented federal tax dollars from being used to fund abortions.
No specific legislation has yet surfaced. Obama began a final push for reform on Wednesday, urging Congress to vote on the plan in the next few weeks even if it means passing the measure with a narrow Democratic majority and no Republican support.
The White House says it does not intend its bill to change current U.S. law on abortion, and does not believe that the Senate healthcare bill, which Obama's plan resembles, would change the status quo.
"The president is not and will not change current federal law in dealing with abortions and healthcare," spokesman Robert Gibbs said at his daily news briefing on Thursday.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Obama's top adviser on health issues, said the White House was prepared to bar the use of federal money for abortion. "This will not change the status quo on the policy of abortion. There will be no federal funding for abortion," she said on the television program.
Stupak said anti-abortion lawmakers are worried that the legislative language will follow the blueprint of the reform bill passed by the Senate, which he said does not provide sufficient safeguards.

Losing weight after childbirth

Many mothers expect they will be able wearing their favorite pre-pregnancy trousers right after arrival home from hospital, after childbirth. In fact, such cases are rather rare. No doubt, weight loss will raise your spirits. However, active self-perfection and parallel care after a newborn baby and rest family members adds even more stress in your life. In this situation healthy nutrition and balance between care about yourself and others are an optimum decision.
What should mothers striving losing weight after childbirth know?
How many kilograms a woman gains during pregnancy?
On average, a woman gains 10-12 kg during pregnancy. During childbirth a woman loses on average 5,6-6 kg, and as a result she has only 4-6 kg of overweight that she needs losing already after childbirth (in rare cases overweight is 10 kg and more kg).
How soon a woman can return her pre-pregnancy weight? Is it possible?
Yes, it is possible. Childbirth does not mean now you will stay full for ever. Most moms return their previous weight in already 8-12 months.
Can a woman stick to a diet during breastfeeding period?
During lactation period a woman should not stick to any diet, however, she should watch her menu closely. During breastfeeding period a woman should eat 500 calories more than her usual norm before childbirth (in case your weight is considered normal comparing with your height). If you have overweight, you need consulting your doctor, it is quite possible, you would not have to eat these additional 500 calories.
During first three months after childbirth a woman should include healthy food in her diet and work out her plan of exercises. After your organism starts recovering and menstrual cycle recommences, you can stick to a healthy diet with low fat content.
Can a woman stick to a diet, if a baby is on artificial feeding?
If you do not breastfeed your baby, you can proceed to a sparing healthy and nutritive diet, however you should remember that, anyway, you need to receive at least 1500 calories with food (three meals).
Which exercises can help a woman getting into shape?
Include walks, runs, swimming or aerobics (30-60 minutes) in your program and repeat this program firstly one a week, and then 2-3 times a week as your organism recovers.

Pregnancy after 30

  • There’s a myth saying about dangerous childbirth after 30. In fact, ovary age changes that reduce a chance of conception, usually happen after 40. At the age of 30 tissues elasticity can be reduced.
  • That’s why frequency of breaches and colpoceles while childbirth increases. However, this happens not always. Childbirth at 30 today is not late childbirth. Modern women of this age are young, healthy and zippy. A term “age limit, late childbirth” should be deposed to 40 years.
  • You should pass all “traditional” checkups and tests. This concerns all women that are preparing to become mothers. In older age – after 30 – you will also need to visit a medical geneticist before pregnancy. And after 35 you will definitely pass a water test that helps revealing a list of hereditary diseases.
  • “Aged” pregnant women also should be constantly observed by therapeutist. The matter is that with age we accumulate usual, non- gynaecological problems, which can prevent normal course of pregnancy and childbirth. For example, heightened or lowered pressure, alimentary canal problems. Doctor will tell you about measures to take to have a healthy pregnancy without complications.
  • The matter is that there is an optimum age for all organs’ work, including genitals. Its limits are individual for each person and are determined genetically. During a period of 30-40 years different people’s calendar age combines with biological one differently.
For example, if your propitious age is 18-38 years, then your chances to conceive easily and give birth to a baby calmly will be equally high both at 20 and 36 years. And at 18 and 40 there can appear some problems, connected with age condition.
  • We repeat again, every woman has her own favorable age. For someone late childbirth will be at 35, and for another one – at 45. However, while competent preparation and pregnancy running you can avoid many problems.
Pregnancy is an excess of female hormones. And all women blossom after it, if their pregnancy was desired and safe. We need to mention also that pregnancy is even more wishful for “late moms”.

Aromatherapy: Pregnancy and childbirth

Benefits of aromatherapy are known for ages, but it had no name until 1920, when the term of aromatherapy was invented in France.
aromatherapyAromatherapy uses essential oils, but first they must be extracted from plants through a long process of distillation. What remains as a result is a concentrated essential oil. Essential oil has a strong flavor and is very concentrated, undiluted it can cause skin irritation, so there are many different ways to use this oil.
It can be used when taking bath, adding a certain amount of essential oil. Then mix water with oil, relax and enjoy taking a bath. If you prefer shower, try to put a small amount of essential oil on the rear of shower, away from the water flow.
Using aromatherapy, you can prepare a mixture of essential oils with sesame seeds, almond or jojoba for massage.
“Touch therapy” includes a few drops of essential oils for cautious massage of temples, forehead and scalp.
To freshen the air or even in your car, you can use essential oils in a bottle of veiled glass with distilled water.
Using aromatherapy during pregnancy and childbirth is also a very old process. Aromatherapy is commonly used to relieve stress and promote relaxation.
Most common flavors:
Lavender - helps to cope with anxiety, stress and depression, strengthens labor pains.
Daisy - “Head” of oils, very gentle, softening and calming mind and body. Helps soothing an irritable, capricious, or nervous person.
Neroli - this oil can be one of the most effective oil-antidepressants, it is useful for insomnia, hysteria, agitation and other stress-related conditions.
So they say due to uplift mood, invigorating and refreshing properties.
Salvia - works well to relax muscles, relieve stress and physical tension.
These are just some of many available oils, and other guides will help you finding the oil for revitalization, energy, and create different moods.
Despite the fact that the use of essential oils has been known since biblical times, the era of rebirth and return to nature and natural products has brought the creation of special blends of oils for different purposes, some of which are very high quality.
They developed a product line that meets special needs of pregnant women, oils for delivery, as well as maternal and newborn.
Pregnant and nursing mothers should pay special attention when buying generic mass-produced products:
* some of generic oils are not suitable for pregnant women and can cause injury;
* There are many levels of essential oils quality and an inexperienced look cannot distinguish them.
Another point is understing the mixture of oils you may require. For example, a mixture of oils to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy - oils for proper care should be selected each for different needs of different skin types, skin elasticity, cell recovery, elimination of scars and to prevent itching during growth of abdomen.
Properly selected mix will provide a complete treatment, have a pleasant smell (some of mixtures cooked at home can smell quite disgusting), and a reasonable price (when buying essential oils in the store, prices can be very high).
Good aroma products are made from the highest quality essential oils in the world, contain environmentally friendly components from flowers and leaves, grown under natural conditions, and mixed so as to be both effective and have pleasant aroma.

How to keep a good nanny

Offer a fair wage. Just as you wouldn't be happy earning a below-average salary at your own job, neither would your nanny. Depending on where you live, how many children you have, the duties involved, and your nanny's experience and education, you may pay anywhere from $300 to $700 a week or more for 40 hours of work.

If you offer room and board, the range is a bit lower, from $300 to $500 a week. But if you plan to have your nanny work longer than eight hours a day or more than five days a week, you need to compensate her for that.

To determine what a competitive salary is in your area, ask nearby parents with nannies what they pay or contact the International Nanny Association.

Provide good benefits. To ensure that your nanny stays, hammer out a sweet incentive package in your employment agreement, which should outline days off, paid holidays, and vacation time.

Some parents provide a car for their nanny to drive. (Make sure she's covered by your car insurance — the premium can be hefty.) Others offer to pay for classes at a community college or for a gym membership. If you're chipping in for health or car insurance, specify this in the contract.

Letting your nanny bring her own child to work is another benefit that will likely make her happier to work for you, but it isn't a reason to lower her compensation.

Treat her like a professional. Her job may be in a home instead of an office, but nannies take their job seriously, and so should you. If you're confident of her abilities, show it. Trust that she'll do a good job and don't second-guess her decisions.

If there's something that you'd like done differently, don't assume that she's wrong and you're right. Be respectful of her approach, and suggest without undermining her that you have your own particular way you'd like it done.

Address any complaints or concerns you may have in a constructive manner. Avoid attacking her personally and stick to the issues at hand.

Lay down ground rules and respect them. Remember, you hired your nanny to care for your child. She's not the housecleaner, so she shouldn't be asked to do extensive housework unless her contract — and her pay — includes that expectation from the beginning.

Don't ask her to run errands unrelated to childcare unless she agrees to certain duties, such as picking up your dry cleaning, ahead of time in her contract.

If her hours end at 6 p.m., make sure you're home at that time (emergencies excepted). And if you have to ask her to stay late, compensate her fairly.

Remember, she has her own life, and if she doesn't live with you, she may have a family to go home to at the end of the day. (See our story on setting ground rules for nanny care.)

Show your appreciation. Remember how good you feel when your employer tells you how important you are to your co-workers? Your nanny needs to hear the same thing. She's doing a very important job for you, and it's important to tell her often how much you value her and the job she's doing.

You might write your nanny a thank-you note anytime she does something especially wonderful or bring her a small gift. If you've stopped at the market on the way home, bring her some fresh fruit. If it's been a stressful week for all of you, a bottle of bubble bath would be a nice acknowledgement.

Celebrate her birthday and other special events. She'll also be thrilled with an unexpected cash bonus for a job well done.

Be flexible. Allow for some changes in your nanny's schedule, as long as she doesn't take advantage of this. Sometimes you have to take time off during the workday for doctor's appointments or other personal errands. So will your nanny.

As long as she gives you plenty of notice so you can find a substitute or adjust your schedule, try to accommodate her needs.

Be communicative. Whether you have compliments or complaints, make sure you touch base with your nanny consistently and often. If she feels you're open to talking, she'll be more likely to approach you with ideas and concerns.

"Be clear and communicate," says Amy, a part-time nanny from El Cerrito, California. She suggests spending a few minutes at the beginning or the end of each day checking in. If you don't see your nanny in person every morning or you're too rushed to talk, try writing down your thoughts.

Many nannies tout the benefits of a written to-do list. Note what you want done, with the date you wrote it down and a "due date" if you need it done by a certain time. Leave a separate column where you can indicate the priority of the various items, so your nanny knows what to tackle first when she has a few free moments.

Back her up. If your nanny attempts to impose agreed-upon restrictions on your child, don't undermine her authority by reversing her decisions. After all, she's only doing what you asked her to do. And you need your child to respect your nanny's authority just as she does yours.

Mary O'Connor says one woman she placed through her nanny referral agency left the family she worked for because the parents took away her power to enforce the rules of the household.

Although they had said she could take away their child's swimming privileges if she misbehaved, they often changed their minds and let their daughter use the pool whenever the child complained to them. This kind of thing is confusing to a child and makes the nanny's job much harder.

Be concerned about your nanny as a person, not just as your employee. Her job may be to care for your child, but she also has her own life. If she's young, she needs time in the evenings to see people her own age. If she has a family of her own, don't keep her overtime any more than you have to or she'll feel like she's having to choose between your children and her own.

Without prying, find out a little bit about your nanny. Does she like music? Is she a movie fanatic? If she has children, ask to see their photos. The more you get to know her, the more she'll feel like the important member of your family that she is.

Respect her privacy and teach your child to do the same. If your nanny lives with you, make sure everyone in your home knows that when the day is done, she's off-duty. Her days off should be truly her own — no asking for last-minute household or babysitting help.

Communicate this to your child as well: For example, if your nanny has Sundays off, make sure your child knows that Sunday mornings aren't the time to knock on her door and ask for breakfast.

Signs of a good babysitter

You've asked other parents for recommendations, called references, and finally hired a babysitter. But how do you know she's doing a good job when you're not around? Here are seven signs to look for:

• Your baby warms up to her. It may take a while before your child grows to trust and love his babysitter. And even the best caregivers can't replace you or your partner. Still, after several sessions together, you should notice your baby warming up to the sitter (which doesn't necessarily mean he's thrilled to see her the minute she walks in the door).

If this isn't happening, it may be that the babysitter isn't providing the kind of warmth and comfort your child needs. Or maybe their personalities just aren't a good match.

• She's genuinely happy to see your baby. If your babysitter truly enjoys spending time with your baby, you'll know it – and your child will sense it, too. Her love will shine through every time they're together.

• She comes up with creative solutions to problems and works with you to provide the best possible care for your child. If your baby hates tummy time, for example, your sitter will try dangling toys in front of him to make it more interesting. If your child isn't sleeping, she'll turn to you for advice. Taking the initiative and collaborating with you shows that she takes her job seriously.

• She respects your time. A conscientious babysitter will arrive on time and call to let you know if she's unexpectedly running late. She'll also give you ample warning when she's unable to care for your child – and may even help you find a substitute caregiver.

• She makes an effort to stay connected. A sitter who takes her job seriously will keep you informed by leaving notes or even filling out a daily report. If you set aside some time for the two of you to catch up, she'll understand that you want to know how your child is doing, and she'll keep you abreast of any problems, big or small.

• Your baby is clean, and messes aren't left for you. Cleanliness is a sign of conscientiousness. You want your sitter to be focused on your child, not busy cleaning your home, but she should tidy up any messes she or your baby makes. She should also wipe off your child's face and hands whenever they get dirty.

• Accidents are infrequent. Of course tumbles will happen, but a good sitter makes safety a priority both at home and when she and your child are out and about. She'll look both ways before pushing the stroller across the street, keep a close eye on your child at the playground, and make sure safety gates stay closed.

If the sitter drives your child, you'll want to drive with her yourself at least once or twice to see what she's like on the road. You'll also want to make sure that her car is reliable, a car seat for your child is properly installed, and that she always buckles your baby up safely.

Is Jennifer Lopez getting more in vitro procedure?

Jennifer Lopez has been dealt another crushing blow in her quest for motherhood.

The 36-year-old Latin beauty underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) with a Beverly Hills specialist in mid-October - only to get the heartbreaking news from an ultrasound earlier this month that the procedure had failed.
But Jennifer’s so determined to have a baby with her husband, singer Marc Anthony, that she’s going to undergo the grueling procedure again, says a source close to the star.
“She’s tried everything else without success, and though IVF has failed once, she knows it’s the only hope left for her to get pregnant,” said the source.
“Marc is supporting Jennifer all the way. He knows how much she wants to be a mother.”

Safe Sleep for Babies

A thinking parent's guide to safe sleep advice

Advice about safe sleep for babies is nothing new. But it sure has changed. Twenty-five years ago, doctors advised parents to put their infants down on their tummies to avoid the possibility of choking on milk or spit-up. Experts were starting to address crib safety issues, such as ensuring crib bars weren’t too far apart. But nobody had much advice for parents on how to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), the tragic incidents where babies die mysteriously in their sleep.

Today, over 20 years of studies have identified numerous risk factors for SIDS (see Understanding risk), resulting in a long list of safety guidelines for parents.

Here is the current advice: Parents are told to place the baby on his back in a crib that meets Health Canada standards, preferably in the parents’ room until the baby is six months old. Sharing a bed with your baby is risky, some experts advise, but having the baby near you protects against SIDS. And, in contrast to the days when cribs were festooned with lush decorative duvets, bumper pads and a stuffed animal or two, today’s baby crib is supposed to be empty except for your baby and perhaps one light, tucked-in blanket. Some advice givers don’t even approve of the blanket. One Canadian parenting website illustrates its safe sleep article with a photo of an empty crib bearing the caption: “No toys, no blankets, no drapes, no bumper pads, no anything.”
Finally, the room should not be too warm, and baby’s environment should be smoke-free.

Not much when you say it fast! Some of this advice has been well accepted (for example, most parents now put babies on their backs). But other advice, particularly advice against bed sharing, has been controversial.
Long lists of safety rules are not only complicated, they have the effect of making it seem as if all risks are equally important. That is not true in the world of safe sleep advice. According to paediatrician and SIDS researcher Aurore Côté, of McGill University in Montreal: “The most important risk factors are smoking during pregnancy, sleeping on the stomach (for the baby) and co-sleeping (bed sharing) in certain situations — on a sofa, if the parents have been drinking or using drugs, or on a makeshift bed with pillows and cushions. None of the other risk factors are nearly as important.”

Here’s a guide to help you understand where today’s safe sleep instructions come from, why some are more important than others, and whether some lesser risk factors might be relevant to you.

How to Prepare for Baby : How much do you know about growing a baby?

Your ninth-month to-do list :

What a month! Excitement, anticipation...maybe a little tinge of worry. Some days, it probably seems to be taking forever; other days, you aren’t sure where the time has gone — and your baby will be here soon! There’s plenty to do in these last weeks: winding up at work, getting your home ready for your amazing new arrival, buying things you’ve never shopped for before, such as diapers and tiny undershirts. Without wearing yourself out, you’ll want to make the most of this precious time.

Need a little help getting organized? Read on!

Ready for the birth

Jill Ritchie, a certified doula and owner of Babeeze in Arms Doula Centre in London, Ont., stresses that the most important thing to do before you have your baby is to plan for support during labour and in the early weeks postpartum.

     • Ritchie recommends writing a birth plan — what she calls a “hopes and wishes list”: a short, realistic, positive letter for your support team describing the kind of labour and birth you’d like to have.

     • You will want to put together a labour bag. Besides your hopes and wishes list, Ritchie suggests including: your hospital registration forms and health card; slippers or warm socks; an oversized T-shirt to labour in; a sports bra for the bath or shower; a robe; comforts (music, lotion, lip balm, hand-held fan); your own pillow and birth ball; a list of people to call and a cellphone or change for the pay phone; and your camera and video camera (both charged!). Add toiletries, Gatorade or clear juice, and nutritious snacks for you and your partner.

    • Pack postpartum supplies too: diapers and clothes for the baby, something comfortable to wear home, maxi-pads and a nursing bra.

Sex During Pregnancy : PREGNANCY Guide

Sex. You had an awkward conversation about it with your mom with when you were 12. You formed your own opinions as a young adult. And, if you’re reading this article with any personal interest, you’ve had some recent first-hand experience.

Now you’re pregnant. Today, sex may seem more inviting than ever or as appealing as taking out the trash — and that may change again tomorrow. For most couples, sex will follow a meandering course of ups and downs through these nine months (and beyond). How these changes affect your relationship is entirely in your hands and, no matter what you’ve heard from your weary parent-friends, the results may be better than you imagine.
The good news

“I think the majority of women enjoy sex even more when they’re pregnant,” says Toronto midwife Andrea Lennox. “Pregnant women have a significant increase in their natural discharge, and that lubrication can make sex quite wonderful. A lot of couples will also say that it’s liberating to not have to worry about birth control, maybe for the first time in their lives.”

When it comes to the emotional changes during pregnancy, David McKenzie, a certified sex therapist with a doctorate in human sexuality in Langley, BC, also sees great benefits. “In men, I’ve noticed an increase in tenderness and concern for their partners. It’s not that they were uncaring or unloving before, but a different level of nurturing will often come forth and draw a couple even closer.”

Diana and Brad Paulson, of Burnaby, BC, found that to be true as they navigated the romantic challenges of their first pregnancy. “We managed to maintain a healthy sex life almost right up until the week that we delivered,” Brad says. “While we weren’t nearly as spontaneous as before, we still enjoyed it and each other.”

Home pregnancy tests : Getting pregnant

A pregnancy test attempts to determine whether or not a woman is pregnant. Modern pregnancy tests look for chemical markers associated with pregnancy. These markers are found in urine and blood, and pregnancy tests require sampling one of these substances.

How do I use a home pregnancy test?

First, read the directions carefully, because the instructions will vary with different brands. Some require you to urinate in a pot and then, using a dropper, place a small sample into a testing well. Others let you pee directly onto a stick. But, fundamentally, all pregnancy tests work the same way; they measure the amount of hCG in your body. What's different is how they display results (positive or negative). Some change the colour of the urine sample, others show pink or blue lines on the test strip, reveal a red plus or minus sign, or the actual words "pregnant" or "not pregnant", in a window.

Are home pregnancy tests accurate?

If you follow directions to the letter, home pregnancy tests are 97% accurate. But mistakes do happen, which is why some kits come with two tests. There are several reasons why a home pregnancy test may be negative: you may not be pregnant, or your body may not be making a normal amount of hCG. If you test too early (before the first day of your missed period), you may get a false negative result because not enough of the hormone has built up in your system. If the test comes back negative but you still suspect you're pregnant, wait a few days, read the directions carefully, and try again. False positives, when the test says you're pregnant but you're not, are rare.

If you have irregular periods, it may be harder to calculate when your period is due. Allow for your longest cycle in recent months before testing. If you have recently stopped taking the contraceptive pill, you may not know how long your natural cycle is so you may end up testing either too soon or too late. If your test is negative in either of these situations, you should test again in three days.

tip: Perform the test first thing in the morning when your urine is most concentrated.

Where can I buy one?

Home pregnancy tests may be purchased without a prescription at most high street chemists and supermarkets. You can also buy them on-line by mail order.

How are home pregnancy tests different from ones performed by doctors?

Many clinics use home pregnancy tests to verify pregnancies, in which case, they're exactly the same. Occasionally, women are given blood tests, but they aren't all that different from home pregnancy tests, either. Both types look for hCG in your body. A blood test is much more sensitive than any over-the-counter kit, which means it can determine whether you're pregnant just six to eight days after you ovulate.

The Top 10 Best Rides and Shows at Walt Disney World's Theme Parks

By , About.com Guide

Are you planning a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida? Do you want to know which rides, shows, and attractions are must-sees at the resort's four theme parks? Herewith, a list of the very best Walt Disney World rides.

10. Turtle Talk with Crush

  • Thrill Scale (0=Wimpy!, 10=Yikes!): 0
This is a charming show with no gotchas or scary moments.
  • Height Requirement: None
  • Location: The Seas with Nemo & Friends Pavilion in Epcot
  • Fastpass: No
Some might find it odd to choose the "Finding Nemo"-themed show above classics such as Jungle Cruise, Star Tours, and Big Thunder Mountain for a top-10 list of best Walt Disney World attractions. But Turtle Talk with Crush, in which the surfer dude interacts with audience members via real-time animation, is an astonishing Imagineering breakthrough. Between laughs, adults scratch their heads in bewilderment, while young kids nonchalantly, if delightedly, chat with the witty reptile. If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for, dude?

9. Splash Mountain

  • Thrill Scale (0=Wimpy!, 10=Yikes!): 4.5
    One giant splashdown
  • Height Requirement: 40 inches
  • Location: Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom
  • Fastpass: Yes
Disney marries the classic log flume ride (with one humdinger of a drop) to an animatronics-filled dark ride themed to the Uncle Remus characters from "Song of the South." You'll be humming "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" (once you regain your composure from the drop).

8. Expedition Everest

  • Thrill Scale (0=Wimpy!, 10=Yikes!): 6
Fairly intense positive G-forces, backwards coaster motion, darkness.
  • Height Requirement: 44 inches
  • Location: Asia land in Disney's Animal Kingdom
  • Fastpass: Yes
As a roller coaster, Expedition Everest is just OK. And as a themed dark ride, the attraction would be just OK without the coaster elements. But the combination of the coaster, which is integral to the ride's story, and the attraction's lavish, immersive environment, creates another Disney E-ticket must-ride and a welcome addition to Disney's Animal Kingdom.

5-Year-Old Boy Sells Lemonade for Haiti

5-Year-Old Boy Sells Lemonade for Haiti

A 5-year-old Kindergartner in California has tried to do his part to help the people of Haiti by raising money with a lemonade stand. In reading the article about him in the Sanbernardino Sun, I was struck by the line, "Instead of watching Nickelodeon, he watches the news."

According to the story, as little Alexander watched the news story about Haiti on TV, he felt the desire to do something to help, and he translated that desire into action. What an amazing experience for that child and the people he must have touched by his efforts. Not only did he feel compassion, but he felt a desire to help.

I think most of us, as fellow human beings, experience that. But, many times that is where it ends. This little boy actually took action. More than just sending a little money from his piggy bank, he went to work. With a little help from mom and dad, he even got a few businesses to donate items for the cause. The amazing thing is that Alexander put in some major effort to help his fellow man, but there are wonderful lessons for him on so many other levels that will probably stay with him for life. I have no doubt this kid will go on to do big things.
As for the 5-year-old watching the news, I think the story goes to show that TV can be a force for good in kids lives when used appropriately. We can't all be in Haiti, but we can get a look at what is going on, and we can be inspired to do something about it. I assume that Alexander watches the news with his parents, and judging by their level of involvement and support, they probably talk as a family about the things they watch.

In our house, we chose to show our kids a few pictures of Haiti from the internet instead of allowing them to watch news coverage.

We try to talk to them about world events and important news, but some things are just more disturbing than I want them to have to deal with right now. Every kid is different, so parents have to decide when the news is appropriate TV viewing for their children. What about your family? When do you allow your kids to start watching the news?

Quote :: Every child begins the world again.- Henry David Thoreau.

Inspired by Imagination

One of the greatest dreamers of our time was Walt Disney. Did you know he created the first sound cartoon, the first all-color cartoon, and the first animated feature length motion picture? Not only was he not afraid to dream, he was not afraid to walk those dreams into reality.

                     Disney's best Quote

" If you can dream it, you can do it "

This really good quote is the one thing of succeed men should have recognized. It should be told to your child or help your kids secretly to be used to dream, then encourage them to make their dream comes true.

Your Kids wanna be Snowwhite and ScoopyDoo ?

This is what you should do.

First , Do not laughing or do something which can embarrass them. Just smile and ask them some questins: Why do you wana be her/him? >>> If they answer well ('Becoz she/he is friendly' etc.), give them a praise.

However , Somekids actually believe in magic, witch, super hero,x-men ..etc.

You must tell them about difference between truth and fairy tale and hollywood !

Student Group Travel: Take a Band Trip to New York City

Student Group Travel: Take a Band Trip to New York City

A high school band trip is one of the most exciting moments in the school year for the student musician. For the high school band, a trip to New York City could mean the ultimate in performance opportunity.

There are certainly plenty of choices for a student group interested in performing in either an adjudicated music festival setting or a performance that is not judged in New York City. This article will give band leaders, music teachers and other student trip planners an overview of some of the major performance and adjudicated music festival venues in the New York City area.

Take the Band to an Adjudicated Music Festival at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey

For high school bands that wish to compete, Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ is just a short bus ride from New York City, and offers superb stages outfitted with excellent equipment. Perform in the auditorium and spend the rest of the day at Six Flags riding the roller coasters, log flumes, and other fun activities.

The Six Flags Music Fest usually occurs in mid-May and is a great opportunity to perform and compete. Bands who do not want to compete in the adjudicated music festival with other schools may still perform and receive a rating from judges. This Six Flags Music Festivals are attended by high school bands, orchestras, ensembles, and choirs from across the United States. Six Flags Great Adventure provides musical performance stages with microphones and amplifiers as well as some percussion instruments.

Adjudicated Music Festivals Held at Universities and Colleges in Early Spring

College is still in session in early spring. Many high school bands that visit New York City compete at two universities within a short distance: Montclair State University

or Rutgers University. Student band trip planners may book adjudicated appearances March-April.

Student performances are staged and judged in college auditoriums and award dinner ceremonies are held at nearby restaurants. The benefits of performing in a collegiate setting include ample seating, excellent acoustics and a quality sound system set-up and ready for student performances. Many of the judges are well known as musicians and directors of the finest bands and orchestras in this country.

Band Trips: Perform at New York City Venues

If the high school band wants to perform publicly in New York City without adjudication there are some wonderful venues to select from that will give the students excellent visibility. The company I own, Educational Travel Consultants, has booked student performance groups at the Statue of Liberty, United Nations, or Lincoln Center. Consider one of these locations as a place to reach out and find a wider audience for a high school band. Remember to book well in advance (6 months to one year) to ensure the performance will take place at the chosen venue.

Complement public performances for the high school bands with some exciting itinerary choices. Add some variety to the student travel itinerary. Many student trips to New York City tour Lincoln Center, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island or Chinatown. Student groups may enjoy some of the best art museums in the world or take in a Broadway show. Students may also visit some of the finest delicatessens in the U.S. and dine at the Hard Rock Café, or a Medieval Dinner theater.

Most importantly, work with an educational travel consultant who is experienced in music festivals and touring New York City. Whatever a student group trip planner chooses for entertainment and dining -- a qualified student travel consultant will assist in building an excellent trip to New York City designed specifically for the high school band.
